Celebrating Women’s Achievements on International Women’s Day

This year’s (2021) theme for International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge. It’s a call-to-action to challenge the status quo, call out gender bias and inequality and celebrate women's achievements.

Today we acknowledge and celebrate a few of the many awesome women in events and sustainability. They’ve shared with us what inspires them, why they do what they do and impactful projects they’ve worked on.

Liz and Rachael set up SE2 in 2004. A small, friendly, focussed and flexible consultancy that helps communities and organisations make a difference in the world of climate change. Sustainability is at the heart of all their work.

You can find out more about them here: https://www.se-2.co.uk/

What inspires you?

Rachael: I’ve been inspired by so many creative, determined, thoughtful, smart, funny women in my life.  It’s a joy to work with them, to learn from them and to count them as my friends.

Liz: I’m inspired by people’s creativity, the ability to find new ways to solve the challenges that we face. There’s a spark that you get when you bring people together: it’s an unstoppable force!

Why did you want to be involved with SE2?

Rachael: We created SE2 in 2004 so we could do things our way, and have built a business around the things we are interested in and the people we want to work with and for.  It’s been great watching the business grow and flex – I can’t believe we’re now 17 years old!

Liz: Setting up SE2 gave us the freedom to work on the things we wanted to and in ways which would suit our lifestyles. What’s been most rewarding along the way has been watching the people in our team and our networks blossom and become real agents for change in their communities and workplaces.

Why you love what you do

Rachael: I love making a difference – helping the planet by helping people think about their actions and influences.  And I love having such a varied workload and meeting such interesting people!

Liz: Every day is different. Every workshop, interview, project and report brings something new. And I’m lucky enough to be sharing the whole journey with the best business partner in the world!

What inspires you?

Many things – my funny, honest, supportive friends and family. The passionate people I work with at Tech Nation. Travelling to different countries and getting to experience the culture.

Why did you want to be involved with events?

I have always loved hosting parties and get togethers for my friends and family, and it just naturally evolved from there really. I felt like working in events would be the perfect way to combine my organisation skills and creative ideas.

Why you love what you do

I think all events people thrive off the adrenaline organising an event gives you (even if the stress has you wondering why you even chose to work in events in the first place). Pre covid – I loved venue searching, thinking of what branding or decor to use, choosing the menu and ultimately bringing people together to have a good time, hear great speakers and make connections. Not to mention the food and drink – I really miss a cold glass of prosecco with my team to toast a successful event!  Now we’ve moved online, I’m really enjoying trying to think of new ways to keep our events interesting and engaging. At Tech Nation I love that we deliver such a variety of events, so there’s no chance of ever getting bored!

What’s the most impactful project you’ve worked on

It would definitely be one of the events I worked on when I used to work at Cancer Research UK. The events were high stakes – we had to sell 500 tickets to these gala dinners, get celebrities to attend, source money can’t buy prizes, then fundraise on the day. Some of the events I worked on raised up to £1m. It would be such an amazing feeling to reach those targets and know the money was going towards more life saving research.

Karen is the Founder & Director of Absolute Alchemy, an events organisation that brings communities together and aims to create safe spaces for meaningful dialogue and debate, in order to innovate and build impactful approaches to difficult societal issues.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired to put on events that make a difference and create change. I’ve taken our business model online and the events I co-host, produce and create for my clients and my own event series are now virtual. I think online events fit with my values around caring for the planet and people.  Without physical events we’re not creating unnecessary waste and travel and carbon emissions are cancelled.

Reaching out to communities all over the world, I’ve made connections all over the globe and met new changemakers abroad, hoping to create fundamental change for the environment and help social justice campaigns.

Why did you want to be involved with events?

I believe that we are at a critical time, in human existence, for the planet and the people who live on this planet. I believe in a fairer society and more equality for all.  I have a firm belief that I can offer an event platform, either digital or in-person, where people can come together to have dialogue and make connections through the medium of events.  This is why I put on events so that we can all make change in our own lives and communities.

Why you love what you do

This is an easy question, I get to meet some incredible people doing the most interesting things through their work and initiatives. I have met people from all over the globe, creating sustainable businesses and enterprises that are making fundamental change, on a number of different levels.  I love hearing their stories and their journey’s that get them to where they are today.  Although there are a lot of negative political, social and economic activities in the world, there is also a huge amount of good going on. I love that I can showcase some of the great work that is going on in the world.

Most impactful project you’ve worked on

I have been working with Hatch for a number of years now and they offer business support for underrepresented founders and impact businesses.  Since the pandemic, I have produced and hosted a large number of online events that are upskilling and educating hundreds of businesses and helping them to grow and scale.  I have the honour to meet some fascinating business owners and start-ups who are trying to make a difference, such as pebble, the online sustainable and lifestyle magazine.  I am very happy to be part of their growth journey and to help these businesses to develop
